We left Dubrovnik on Sunday with 3 cruise ships in port. The weather was cloudy and warm but not good enough to entice us into the water for our last swim in the Adriatic. We headed for Plitvice Lakes and had to drive for about 2 hours before we could get on the Motorway. What a difference it makes, you certainly pick off the miles especially when the motorway is empty! The scenery was picturesque but did not compare to the coastal drives we have done. There was one stunning part of the motorway drive and that was from Zadar to Sveti Rok, amazing construction engineering over the mountains. After we had come off the motorway the scenery changed again, green pastures and we even saw some cows and sheep! The scenery in the area of Plitvice Lakes is lovely but alas it was chucking it down with rain. We stopped at the information centre to get a map of the Lakes so that we could plan our walk for the next day and stayed the night at Kamp Kurona.
Well it rained and it rained so we decided yesterday that it probably wasn’t the best way to see the National Park, we were in the clouds and couldn’t see for mist so we decided to leave Plitvice Lakes and the National Park for another time. It was at Plitvice that the war in the 90’s first started and even now there are still some remnants from that time, shell and bullet damaged houses, abandoned houses and as we passed through a town called Karlovak there looked to be an open air museum displaying damaged tanks, heavy artillery and a shot down plane.
We took a look at the at the map and sorted out our route for the day which was to head north, cut across west to the top of Istria, then through Slovenia to Italy (on a non motorway road so that Tony could save €15 for the vignette!). We passed Venice, Padova and Verona to get to here we are now without stopping at any of them. How could you, you may ask but the weather was against us all the way yesterday!
Last night we arrived at Lake Garda and are camped on the water’s edge at a fabulous campsite, Camping Cisano, The plan today is to head to Austria via the Brenner Pass but not on the motorway, no, on the old road! We will then head for Lake Constance and follow the northern shore in Germany. It’s not raining but overcast so hopefully we will be able to take in some wonderful views

Really enjoying reading your blog Rose they are very entertaining and informative. Glad some pics up of you now. What a fabulous trip you are both having and what memories, this really is the only way to see a country in its entirety.

I see you have now left the sun in the adriatic and are now entering the wet and bleaker area of the german /austrian border.Despite the high price of the fuel in your tank its time to get your foot down and head west to get the last remnants of our great british summer before its all over.

Thank you for that but we will be calling in on Paris for the weekend first. We will be home Sunday evening.
