North Mull

Yesterday we explored the North of Mull leaving Craignure and turning left at Slane which took us to Loch na Keal. The road runs alongside the loch and the scenery can only be described as stunning. The weather was on our side again today with lovely blue skies and plenty of sunshine which just added to the beauty. We spoke to a lady who was packing her canoe with her husband and she told us they were off on a 10 day kayaking trip with the intention of circumnavigating Mull and they had all their equipment and provisions with them to last the 10 days, including ingredients to make their own bread and cakes!

There were quite a few enthusiasts with their huge cameras and telescopes and even one without any aids, looking to the skies in the hope of finding sea eagles and golden eagles and apparently they were not disappointed. Jill & Kevin stopped and were able to see the sea eagle.

We stopped off at Oskamull where you can catch the ferry to Ulva which is just a stone’s throw away from Mull, then continued northwards up the west coast for a suitable lunch stop before we made it to Calgary.

The beach at Calgary is truly beautiful you could be deceived to thinking you were on a beach on an island in the Caribbean not an island in Scotland, apart from the temperature! Pure white sands and turquoise seas. Tony, Kevin and Jill even had a paddle in the sea! You can also free camp here.

It’s a very scenic drive to Tobermory passing through the village of Dervaig.

All I can think of when I hear the name Tobermory is the children’s programme called Balamory as it was filmed there and then I start singing the theme tune “What’s the story on Balamory, wouldn’t you like to know”!

Tobermory is a very pretty harbour with brightly coloured houses dotted along the harbourside. We wanted to go to the Mishnish but it was not open at 5.30pm so walked back to another bar had a couple of drinks and then ate fish and chips on the quayside whilst watching the jelly fish in the harbour.

We have decided to stay overnight in a car park in Tobermory with a few other campers, our first night free camping in Scotland with Internet access!

Apparently, after some local enquiries, they were last seen sinking to the bottom of the loch together with the package inside them!
