Settle Railway – Trip to Appleby

We drove to Ribblehead train station to catch the train to Appleby to experience the famous Settle railway that runs from Leeds to Carlisle and take in the wonderful views of the Yorkshire Dales. At the station there is a small cafe and shop run by very helpful and friendly volunteers who make an excellent cup of tea!

The journey took us over the Ribblehead Viaduct and through the stations of Dent, the highest mainline railway station in England, then through Garsdale, and Kirkby Stephen before arriving at Appleby. The journey took about 40 minutes and was scenic and well worth doing.

We explored Appleby a lovely market town before heading back to catch the train back to Ribblehead.

We drove back through Dentdale following the River Dee and through the extremely pretty cobbled street village of Dent and then along Garsdale, following the River Clough before finally heading back to Hawes. The scenery was really beautiful and somewhere to explore in more detail (maybe on foot) another time!
