My perception of Benidorm was that it was brash, full of old age pensioners, bingo and souvenir shops on every corner, run down and full of bars and restaurants offering fried food and cheap alcohol and generally a bit rough.
Whilst most of the above is true, the seafront is certainly not run down and there are two fabulous beaches, Levante and Poniente and the old town sits on the spit of land between them. There is a great ski tow line at one end of Levante beach and well maintained promenades that run along the back of both beaches are a great place for a walk, a cruise in your tandem mobility scooter or to sit back at one of the numerous bars and restaurants and watch the world go by.
Levante beach is backed with high rise apartments and hotels and was certainly very busy in comparison to anywhere else we have visited so far in Spain and we did feel as if we were on the set of the TV programme aptly named ‘Benidorm’.
We found the area around Poniente beach was less busy with plenty of room for an exercise class and looked slightly more upmarket, maybe we are just snobs!
We can see why Benidorm is so popular with tourists, there is everything on your doorstep, beach, shops, markets, restaurants, bars and pubs and cabaret entertainment, if that is what you are looking for in a holiday. So, to my brother John, we have found the perfect place for you to buy a property in Spain and don’t forget to send us a Christmas card!
As yesterday was St Patrick’s Day, there were plenty of Irish out celebrating and I managed to capture a few images.
After our whistle stop tour of Benidorm, we headed further south and stopped for the afternoon to sit in the sun next to the sea at the lovely town of Villajoyosa which has a super beach and the houses in the town are gaily painted in different colours a pleasant relief from the high rise lifestyle of Benidorm, although you could still see Benidorm in the distance.
We are now in a campsite on the outskirts of Alicante, El Jardin, close to the town of Campello. Although it is the nearest campsite to Alicante in the ACSI book, I don’t think I would recommend it for a long stay, the facilities are clean but the site itself is not attractive!
