Drive to Plage de Pampelonne, St Tropez

We left La Tour Fondue and headed east along the coast to our next destination, an Aire at the back of Plage de Pampelonne in St. Tropez. We stopped at Le Lavendou for provisions and fuel, then drove the very scenic Cornich des Maures, the coastal road that runs from Le Lavandou to La Croix-Valmer, a shoreline trimmed with sandy beaches ideal for swimming and sunbathing. We stopped at a small beach just east of La Fossette for a couple of hours sunbathing and a swim then continued along the Cornich. I felt that I should have been in a convertible with a headscarf and large sunglasses as the road hugged the coastline catching glimpses of azure and turquoise blue seas and beautiful villas perched into the hillsides, a truly stunning drive.

We left the road at La Croix-Valmer and continued along another scenic winding and twisting road that crosses the St Tropez Peninsula to the village of Ramatuelle and Pampelonne beach.   When we arrived at the aire it was mobbed and there was a sign saying that it was full. Two motorhomes in front of us were turned away but not to be put off by this we asked if there was a space for a small campervan and clearly it must have been Tony’s charm, the girl on the gate let us in. We found a spot and just as we were setting off for the beach on foot, we noticed a motorhome moving out so we quickly moved into the empty space.

We took the short walk to the beach, the last time we had been here was in 1980, driving down in our bright yellow 2CV.   I remember it well and Tony remembers the topless ice-cream sellers and is still looking for them! The beach looked the same although there did appear to be a few more restaurants and it beach didn’t seem to be as deep as we had remembered. We had a swim and dried off in the sun before walking back to the Aire and finding some of the campers enjoying a game of boules.

Useful Info

We have found that the popular beach side Aires get very full at the weekend so best to get to them either on the Thursday evening or early in the day on Friday. We were lucky to get into this one!

He would have done if he had found the topless sellers! I think it is the wrong end of the season for them.

Yes Penny this trip is amazing and we are loving it all so far. There is too much nice ice-cream here but doing plenty of exercise to combat it!
