The weather was less windy, so we took the opportunity to cycle all the way to Salou along the cycle path that hugs the coast from Cambrils to Salou. We stopped for an ice-cream next to the Marina and the beach and took a look at the stunning Villa Bonet built in 1918 and designed by architect Domenec Sugranyes i Gras, a scholar and colleague of Antoni Gaudi. In the garden stands a shrine whose dome of tiles is a reminder of Parc Guell in Barcelona. There is also a sundial that shows the words “Seize the time that passes and does not return”.
There is a lovely palm tree lined boulevard that runs between the beach and the road with numerous fountains including the Cybernetic fountain a show with water, sound and light that is synchronised and choreographed at night. Unfortunately none of the fountains were turned on for us on our visit so they clearly hadn’t heard we were coming!
We cycled to the northern end of the beach before turning back.
The cycle path is super, very flat and smooth although a bit narrow towards Salou and probably extremely busy in the high season. Tony and I cycled a total distance of about 14 miles and almost 16 for Penny and Marc as they diverted to the market in Cambrils for some steaks that we cooked on the BBQ and ate together in the evening.
