The Journey Back from Portugal Through Spain To France

Bit of a boring post this one but hopefully one that will help other travellers with the route!

We left Lagos and started heading north passing through Silves and picking up the IC 1 to Ourique then the IP 2 to Evora, the N18 to Estremos, the 4 towards Elvas then the A6 to Badejoz and finally picking up the EX 100 to Caceras.  The roads were mostly single lane but not very busy and the scenery changed all the time.  We stayed overnight on the Aire at Caceras, a town definitely worth a walk around another time, together with Evora and Elvas!  We drove about 270 miles.

The following morning, we left early enough to see the sun rise as we had another long drive ahead and took the A66 to Salamanca, passing through Plasencia and Bejal.  We continued on the A62/E80 until we reached Burgos passing through Valladolid and Palencia.  The list of towns to visit is getting rather long and the scenery just seems to change every day.  We crossed the plains of Spain today with not a raindrop in sight!   We stayed overnight on an Aire in Burgos and walked out in the evening for a quick drink before meeting up later in the evening with another English couple, Peter and Angela who were parked next to us in the Aire and naturally swopped and shared our travel adventures so far.  Burgos is another town that needs a proper visit! We drove 287 miles.

Today we left Burgos in sunshine and ended about an hour later ended up in mist for about the next two hours.  We took the N1/E80 to Hernami passing through Miranda, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Altasasu and Beasain before being diverted off the A15 due to an accident.  We finally got to Hendaye where Tony took the decision to take the motorway the rest of the way to Capbreton as we had been sitting in very slow-moving traffic for about an hour and he wanted to get to the beach!

We are staying the night on the beachside aire at Capbreton, a surfer’s paradise, there are plenty of them here today, particularly as today is a bank holiday in Spain.  We sat on the beach and enjoyed watching the surfers and Tony was brave enough to go into the water. We drove 193 miles today and will be visiting friends in Lot-et-Garonne for the next few days.
