The Journey South

We’re off on our 12th campervan tour of Europe since 2013 and heading for Spain. On Monday we took a late afternoon Eurotunnel to Calais and headed for Pont de l’Arche, via the A16 toll, the A28 to Rouen and the 6015 to Pont de l’Arche, staying overnight at the Aire, with good motorhome facilities and perfectly situated close to the town.

The following morning we headed south on the 154 to Chartres, passing through fields of yellow rape seed, the 10 to Chateau Renault, 910 to Tours, 910 to Poitiers, (We would recommend getting on the A10 motorway toll around Poitiers avoiding lots of traffic lights and roundabouts!  We continued along the 10 stopping just south of Angouleme at the Aire in Roulette St Estephe for our second overnight, another decent aire with motorhome services.

Three days in and we were heading for the Pyrenées and across the border into Spain.  After skirting the ring road around Bordeaux we followed the A63 to J18, the 834 to Mont de Marsan, 824 and 834 to Pau then the 134 over the Col du Somport.

An easy scenic route at this time of year, the roads a little bit narrower on the French side but once at the top, they open up into Spain.  After crossing into Spain we took the 330/A23 to Jaca with the intention of staying overnight at the Aire but it was full so continued south to the Aire at Sabinanigo, called Pirenarium, which wasn’t in our Spanish Aires book but we found on Search for Sites App.  The Aire has good motorhome facilities including electric hook up and next to the Police Station, making you feel very secure! The Aire at Sabinanigo

With the sun still shining we set off again on the 330/A23 to Zaragoza, after where we stopped off in Tereul looking for a Lidl but low and behold it was market day and heaving!   We drove up and down trying to track down the Lidl only to discover that you could only access it via an underground car park!  Tereul looked a very interesting town to stop at another time though.

We continued to Segorbe where we turned off for Camping Altomira in Navajas.  The campsite is set up on terraces on a hillside overlooking the town of Navajas with good facilities and set in a lovely location for exploring the surrounding countryside or an overnight stop en-route to the Med.

After 4 days in the driver and passenger seats we took a walk down to the river following it along until we reached a couple of lovely waterfalls.

We walked back through the old town of Navajas, a typical hillside town with narrow streets, a square and a church returning back up the steep hill to the campsite.

The final leg of our journey to Mazarrón took us along the A23 to Segunt, the A7 around the north of Valencia, the A35 and the 344 to Yecla, the A33 (new road not on our map) & A30 to Murcia and finally the A7 and RN 3 to Mazarrón.   It was at Mazarrón that we met up with Mick & Jill who with their caravan had taken the ferry from Portsmouth to Bibao.

We’ve enjoyed the whole journey south, trying out a new route for us over the Pyrenées with just a few disagreements between the navigator, driver and satnav, par for the course!

We are now settled into our campsite for the next week, Camping Playa de Mazarrón, situated on the beach at Bolnuevo, Mazarrón, the sun is shining and we are looking forward to some R&R with a little bit of exploring on our bikes.
